THE CHALLENGE

Cleo has been creating quality science & tech content for two years, but CTR had plateaued at 6-7% for eight consecutive months. Despite strong watch time and engagement metrics, Cleo's videos were getting buried within hours of upload.

The thumbnails followed a standard tech YouTube format: stock photos of graphs and charts, generic question-based titles, and corporate blue color schemes. They looked professional but blended into a sea of identical content. Competing channels with similar subscriber counts were achieving 12-14% CTR using more dynamic visual approaches.

Cleo needed a design strategy that maintained her brand's educational credibility while standing out in a saturated niche. The challenge was balancing professionalism with scroll-stopping visual impact.


WHAT I DID

My process started with competitive analysis and data-driven design decisions to create thumbnails that would outperform in Cleo's specific niche.

✓ Niche Research & Competitive Analysis

Analyzed the top 20 performing videos in the science & tech niche from the past 60 days. Identified common patterns: high-contrast color schemes (orange/blue), bold sans-serif typography, and clear visual hierarchies outperformed stock photo approaches by an average of 4.8% CTR.

✓ Color Strategy Overhaul

Implemented a bold orange and blue color-blocking system that created immediate visual contrast in feed. This departed from generic corporate blue while maintaining professional credibility. Color psychology research shows orange triggers urgency and action—perfect for investment content.

✓ Typography Redesign

Replaced small, paragraph-style text with concise, curiosity-driven headlines using Inter Display at 72pt weight. "Index Funds vs Stocks: Which?" performed 3.2x better than a generic headline.


THE RESULTS

✓ CTR increased from 6.4% to 14.7% (+8.3 percentage points), more than doubling the channel's click-through rate.

✓ Video reached 1.8M views within 60 days compared to channel average of 420K views, representing a 4.3x improvement.
